करुणा खूप दिवसांनी आपल्या गावाकडच्या घरी आलेली असते, घराचं रूपच पालटून गेलेलं असतं. तिन्ही नव्या सुनांनी अनेक आधुनिक बदल केले होते. घराबाहेर लेडी स्कुटर होत्या, भिंतींवर तिघांच्या लग्नाच्या फ्रेम लागलेल्या होत्या, वस्तूंची बऱ्यापैकी अदलाबदल झालेली होती…

15 दिवस सरले, आता परिस्थिती रुळावर यायला लागलेली, सर्वजण आपापल्या कामाला लागले. राघवेंद्र करुणा ला म्हणाला,

“चल, आता आपल्यालाही जावं लागेल परत..”

करुणा चा तिथून पाय हलेना, डोक्यात एकच विचार…सासूबाईंच्या स्वप्नांचं काय? त्यांची रामराज्याची संकल्पना कोण पुढे नेणार? त्यांच्यानंतर घरात धाक असेल आधी कुणीही व्यक्ती नव्हतं…

करुणा शहरात असताना तिन्ही देराणींशी तिचं बोलणं व्हायचं, त्या मोजक्याच बोलायच्या..तिघीही शिकलेल्या होत्या, करुणा नंतरची सून शिक्षिका होती, दुसरीचं पार्लर चं शॉप होतं आणि तिसरी अकाउंटंट म्हणून जॉब ला होती..तिन्हीही सकाळी घरातून बाहेर पडायच्या, आणि संध्याकाळीच परत यायच्या…

करुणा राघवेंद्र ला म्हणाली,

“हे बघा…मला इथे सर्व व्यवस्था लावल्याशिवाय येता येणार नाही…सासूबाईनंतर आता माझी जबाबदारी आहे घराला तोलून धरायची..”

राघवेंद्र कुठलेही आढेवेढे न घेता तिला परवानगी देतो…



“माझं सामान तेवढं इकडे पोचवण्याची व्यवस्था करा..”

“ठीक आहे..”

रात्री सर्वजण आपापल्या खोलीत गेले..करुणा अन राघवेंद्र ची खोली इतरवेळी रिकामीच असायची, खूप दिवसांनी ती खोलीत गेली…खोली पाहण्यासारखी राहिलीच नव्हती….धूळ, जळमत… आम्ही नसताना कुणी येऊन साफ करू नये? तिला प्रश्न पडला…

तिने स्वतः खोली साफ केली, जळमट काढलं…झाडू मारला..बेडशीट बदलायचं होतं… पण कुठे सापडणार आता? ती तिच्या देराणीच्या खोलीत गेली…दार वाजवणार इतक्यात आवाज आला..

“सासूबाईंसाठी थांबलो होतो ना आजवर इथे? आता काय? किती दिवस इथेच अडकून पडणार आहोत?”

“अगं मग कुठे जाणार आपण?”

“ते मला माहित नाही, मला इथे एकत्र राहायचं नाही बस..”

करुणा ते ऐकूनच सुन्न झाली…ती दुसऱ्या देराणीकडे गेली..तिथे तोच सूर…मनाली ला काही कळतं की नाही, इथे मी आणि वृषाली राब राब राबत होतो अन ती? फक्त बसून होती…असंच चालू राहीलं ना तर एक दिवस भांडण होईल घरात…

तिसऱ्या देराणीकडे जाताच..

“बस झालं आता…लग्ना आधी म्हटलेलास की आपण वेगळे राहू, तुझ्या भरवशावर खूप दिवस काढले…आता बस…”

करुणा रडतच आपल्या खोलीत परतली… सासूबाईंनी कसला त्रागा करून घेतलेला याचं कारण तिला हळूहळू लक्षात आलं..

तिने विचार केला..
“खरं ते सोपं नाहीये इतक्या माणसांनी समंजसपणे एकत्र राहणं. तडजोड, प्रेम, त्याग या गोष्टी असल्या की आपली माणसं आपल्याला जड होत नाहीत…पण यांच्यात असं काय बिनसलं की प्रत्येकजण घर सोडायची गोष्ट करतोय???”

करुणा ला आता ही घडी नीट करायची होती…ते साधं काम नव्हतं..फार मोठं आव्हान होतं… सासूबाईंच्या स्वप्नाला तिला असं धुळीत मिसळू द्यायचं नव्हतं… तिने जबाबदारी घेतली होती…

विचार करतच ती झोपी गेली..

दुसऱ्या दिवशी ती लवकर उठली, सडा मारला, झाडाझुड केली…7 वाजले तरी अजून कुणीच उठलं नव्हतं..अंगणातली झाडं कोमेजून जात होती…सासूबाई एकमेव त्यांना पाणी घालायच्या..त्यांच्या जाण्याने रोपही आता निरोप घेऊ लागले होते…करुणा ने त्यांना चटकन पाणी दिलं…मुळाकडच्या आसुसलेल्या कोरड्या मातीने चटकन ते पाणी अधाशासारखं शोषून घेतलं..त्यांच्यात जणू एक तरतरी आली…

ती स्वयंपाक घरात आली..तिन्ही देराण्या स्वयंपाक करत होत्या…पण फक्त आपला अन आपल्या नवऱ्याचा…
